Dream: Liturgy and priesthood

Last night’s dream:

I was on a spiritual retreat at some place which looked like a mansion; lots of big cushy rooms with expensive furniture.  There were other guests on this retreat, perhaps 20 in all.  I didn’t really get much of an impression of the other guests; incongruously for the surroundings, most of us were dressed very casually.  I, for instance, was in my usual T-shirt and jeans.  We engaged in only light discussion of our spiritual backgrounds/beliefs, mostly having just small talk, weather, sports, pop culture, etc.

A few of the guests however … [more]

Scary words

Crowley translates Hebrew עולה as “common holocaust”.  Yikes.  Let’s look into it.

First off, he published Sepher Sephiroth years before the rise of Hitler to power.  Whew.

Second, he lifted the definition straight from von Rosenroth’s “comm. holocaustŭ” which dates back centuries.

The word actually refers to the Israelites’ burnt offerings, particularly while they were journeying to the promised land.

The original meaning of the Greek word is indeed “whole burnt offering”. See, the Greek holo- should be familiar in such words as “holistic”, which refers to treating the whole person; and the -caust is the same … [more]

Crowley the Hebraist, again

Continuing to work on fixing Crowley’s gematria entries, I find the Hebrew word אשת.  Crowley doesn’t define it; he simply says “Deut. xxiii. 1.”

Deuteronomy 23:1 does not contain this Hebrew word.  But it translates to:

He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD. (KJV)

The word today means things like “wife, companion, lady, girl”.  In the Bible, the word is also used several times disparagingly of men who have become weak or effeminate:

Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting; they remain in … [more]

The peak and the thorn

I’m going through every Hebrew entry in Crowley’s Sepher Sephiroth (“book of emanations”, or simplified, “book of numbers”) and looking at what each Hebrew word actually means by comparing it to Hebrew Biblical dictionaries, and sometimes looking at modern Hebrew ones too for a backup (being aware of linguistic change, of course).

There are lots of typos.  This will take a while.

Today, the Hebrew word קוץ (pronounced much like the English “coats”).  In a modern dictionary, as well as Biblical ones, it means “thorn”.  But Crowley translates it “The crown, summit, point.”  Well, I guess … [more]

Dream: A big mansion

(Initials used are pseudonymous and are not the real persons’ initials.)

Last night’s dream: I was coming into possession (but see below) of a big mansion somewhere. It wasn’t explicitly in Pittsburgh, nor explicitly not, but a number of waking-life friends dropped in for a party. Not every person in the dream was someone I know in waking life.

There were four floors. I was showing the place off to visitors.

One feature I remember was a large patio facing the back yard on which there was, absurdly, a bathtub.  It had a roof over it, … [more]

Grand re-reopening!

After many years away from it, and a tremendous amount of soul-searching, I have an announcement to make: I’m back in business.

This is not a repeat from 2009.

After several years of skepticism and doubt, triggered by a combination of natural growth and unpleasant experiences with people whose views on magick took them dangerously away from reality (as opposed to merely slightly away), I’ve come full-circle.

My renewed occult studies may come as a disappointment to two types of people:

friends who adhere to mainstream revealed religions and hoped I might come around
friends who adhere to … [more]

Broken toe

I broke my toe last night.  Tripped very hard on the stairs and went “ow.”

The treatment is basically “elevate it when you can, periodically put ice on it, and take painkillers.”

X-ray follows, for the curious:

You can see the top view looks just about normal, but the side view clearly shows where the bone was chipped.

My anti-drug

A month or two ago Blizzard sent me the “Crap, you used to give us lots of money but haven’t in a while; please have a free week of WoW on us so that you’ll start having to pay for it again” email.  I chose not to at the time.  This past weekend I was frustrated and annoyed at having to cancel plans due to having a bad cold and being stuck at home.  Couldn’t even lay down comfortably due to breathing issues.

Hmmm, I thought; sure, Blizz, let me have free entertainment on … [more]

Here I come to save the day

I have made an executive decision to have delusions of grandeur, if delusions they be.  I went off my game, spirituality-wise and life-wise, back in 1998 when the Great Evil came to my life, and I’ve noticed that the entire world has been veering towards catastrophe ever since.

I apologize for not realizing sooner that I held the fate of an entire planet in my hands, but rational thinking compelled me to consider other possibilities.

We no longer have time for rational solutions.  The time left to save the world from itself is mere months.  … [more]
